Ashton holds a PhD degree in chemical engineering focusing on wastewater treatment in the context of a circular bioeconomy. He has worked in the water sector for over 8 years and has expertise in market intelligence, consultancy, intellectual property and commercialisation, research and development, water governance, teaching and training. Ashton has previously worked as a school teacher, research and teaching assistant, process engineer, and lecturer.

Ashton is a thought leader who is passionate about water for inclusive and sustainable socioeconomic development. He has served in various conference organising committees and is currently a member of the scientific programme committee for the upcoming Stockholm International Water Institute’s World Water Week in Sweden. He is an active member of the International Water Association (IWA) where he serves as the vice chair of the Young Water Professionals Steering Committee and the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA) where he serves as the outgoing chair of Young Water Professionals South Africa. Ashton is also a non-executive director (board member) of WISA and advisory board member of Imvelisi Enviropreneurs program. He also volunteers as a mentor, reviewer, academic supervisor, and examiner.
