The Big Picture

Sustainability is an often repeated and overused term but overlooked and when it comes to implementing into designs and changing behaviors to achieve lasting change. The course centers around understanding what aspects of sustainability are relevant to our industries and within our respective industries of water, construction and power sectors can proactively respond in order to reduce the impact of global warming through our own schemes, both personal and professional.

Course Delivery and Context

This course has been designed for live on-line e-classroom delivery via Zoom, for interactive learning, in order to increase the learner’s awareness in specialist subject matter areas. It is part of the wider training Programme for Water Professionals facilitated by Isle.

Who is this course for?

The course is designed to empower and provoke individuals to take action, based on scientific evidence, best practice and social impacts within their respective fields and organizations; in order to enable and support strategic and systemic sustainable thinking. To change behaviours and create sustainability champions and advocates, who have sufficient information, evidence and knowledge to converse, negotiate and contribute to positive changes within their environments.

It also recommended for all members involved within the wate community levels of staff from site operatives to site managers, to construction teams to senior managers, directors, design teams, quantity surveyors, engineers and consultant. Thus, ensuring disciplines have sufficient general awareness and understanding in order to question, converse or perhaps further explore the possibilities and advantages of utilising sustainable development concepts within their work streams.

Course Outcomes

This course sets the scene for all the courses to follow under Sustainability and Communication stream of learning and is a required pre-requisite. The following outcomes will be conveyed through interactivities, case studies, discussions and teaching.

• Ability to distinguish between tangible sustainable benefits offered by a company/product vs greenwashing.

• Conversational understanding of various aspects under the umbrella of sustainability and the ability to challenge their relevance/absence within a project.
