The Big Picture

Understand the importance of Preliminary Treatment in the wider context of Wastewater Treatment, its importance in protecting downstream processes and how the water sector can proactively respond and work together to reduce the pressure on this critical treatment. Outlines it’s contributing benefits to energy-from-waste, and economic impacts in relation to carbon tax.

Course Delivery and Context

This course has been designed for live on-line e-classroom delivery via Zoom, for interactive learning, in order to increase the learner’s awareness in specialist subject matter areas. It is part of the wider training Programme for Water Professionals facilitated by Isle.

Overview

Preliminary Treatment at an inlet is the first defence within a Wastewater Treatment process and protects and extends the equipment lifetimes on site, improves operations and drives efficiencies. Yet it is one of the least well-managed aspects of treatment due to resources. This course explores the repercussions on downstream process as well as health and safety.

The course first defines commonly accepted wastewater characterisations and clarifies common misnomers and outlines the modern issues of treatment, from wet wipes to plastics to FOGs (Fats, Oils and Greases). It provides practical guidance in terms of storm water management and the impacts of poorly management storm tanks.

It will provide operator and managers and overview of the various design criteria required to achieve various flow requirements as per regulatory mandates. Moreover, it will provide guidance on rag and grit removal and separation and explore the greatest concerns related to preliminary treatment: the safe and economic disposal of grit and rag, and the dealing with increased non-biodegradable solids.

Who is this course for?

The course is designed for operators, managers, project managers, designers and optimisers and all those working in the wastewater sector to ensure that they are familiar with both the theoretical aspects as well as operational aspects. The course includes aspects of troubleshooting and hazardous conditions that may be prominent on site.

This course requires delegates to have a basic understanding of wastewater treatment processes.

Course Outcomes

The following outcomes will be conveyed through interactivities, case studies, discussions and teaching.

• Understanding wastewater characteristic and defining flowrates.

• Understand different types of screen and screenings and reason for removal.

• Understand issues and challenges associated with Fats, Oils and Greases.

• Understand grit and reasons for removal.

• Understand plant design, selection and maintenance.

• Increased awareness of operation and maintenance, health and safety issues, failure modes, fault finding, problem solving.

• Discussion of relevant case studies,

• Exploration of innovate solutions and future scenarios

Delegate Course Requirements and Expectations

Training Platform: Zoom. Please ensure that you are able to access Zoom ahead of time. We will be happy to help you test this prior to the course.

Equipment: Laptop, with audio and visual capabilities (webcam enabled), smart phone and pen and paper

Assumed knowledge: A basic understanding of the water sector is assumed, and satisfactory equivalent of English and Maths capability is required to proceed.

Differently abled learners: At present we are sadly unable to offer courses that are suited for those who are vision impaired or suffer from hearing loss. We are working towards improving our service.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD): The course syllabus will include a mandatory pre-reading list and optional post-reading. It will conclude with an online live test, and a Certificate of Attendance which can be used to claim ONE (1) CPD-points from WISA, SACNASP and ECSA will be awarded to successful learners.
