About the event
This Catchment Management course provides a detailed in-depth look into sustainable resource management approaches from a catchment perspective, in contrast to a piecemeal approach that artificially separates land management from water management. This holistic view can define ways for protecting the surrounding land around drinking water sources.
The course will explore the major issues and the changes required by all stakeholders, highlighting current research and available tools in order to aid better decision making. It will highlight pollution pathways and explore prevention and management of pollution through no-build solutions vs traditional end of pipe solutions.
As water providers, we need to understand that there are competing demands for freshwater and acknowledge that surface and groundwaters also require sufficient water quality and quantity in order to protect ecosystems.
In order to achieve this balance, all stakeholders from within the water communities as well as policy makers, farmers,regulators, NGO’s, wildlife and nature organizations require a greater collaborative understanding and transparent decision making to deliver solutions.
Who is this course for?
The course is designed for those working in the water and wastewater sector to provide an introduction to Catchment Management for those with industry knowledge, but no specialist Catchment Management expertise.
The course is open to anyone working in the SADC region, whether a WISA member or not.
This course will run from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., including three breaks through the day and a proof‑of‑learning exercise at the end of the course. A detailed programme will be provided to delegates who register along with some pre-reading, before the course.
The course covers the following topics:
The course will conclude with an overview of the day’s activities, completion of a short feedback survey and a live proof-of-learning exercise in order to assess delegates’ learning.
- Introduction to Catchment Management,
- Brief overview of pollution pathways,
- Pollutants and their impacts,
- Catchment management governance,
- Exploring end-of-pipe solutions vs. no-build solution methodologies,
- Stakeholder engagement,
- Preventative and Remedial Tools and Techniques (including Rewilding),
- Global and local case studies.
To encourage further learning delegates will be provided a list of useful resources.

Continuing Professional Development
The course will conclude with an online proof-of-learning exercise, and a CPD certificate for one point will be provided afterwards.
This course has been designed for live on-line delivery, for interactive learning, in order to increase the learner’s awareness in the subject matter areas.
Delegate Course Requirements and Expectations
Knowledge Testing: All courses will conclude with a short live proof-of-learning exercise which will be undertaken immediately after each course. Pass mark is 70%. A review of answers can be concluded in a short 15 minute post course session.
Delegate Capacity: The courses are designed for 12-15 persons (Minimum 12). All delegates will be required and positively encouraged to actively participate. The courses will include at least two group interactivities, along with quizzes, role-play scenarios, calculations, and games as appropriate.
Assumed knowledge: A basic understanding of the water sector is assumed, and satisfactory equivalent of English and Maths capability is required to proceed.
Equipment: Laptop and a smart phone with Wi-Fi connection, audio and visual capability (webcam enabled). Note that both a laptop and a smart phone will be required in most cases. The laptop will be utilized as the main learning tool, whilst smart phone activities will be integrated to enhance learning. The technology/apps that will be utilized will be required to be downloaded prior to commencement of the course. These will be provided ahead of course commencement.
Differently abled learners: At present we are sadly unable to offer courses that are suited for those who are vision impaired or suffer from hearing loss. We are working towards improving our service.
After registration, delegates will receive the day’s programme, a login link and joining instructions for a secure Zoom Pro session. Delegates do not need to have their own Zoom account, as we will use the Isle Utilities pro account to host the session. They may join either by using Zoom on the web, or by downloading the app.
Delegates will also receive some pre-course reading and preparation work (requires approx. 30‑40 minutes prior to the course).
