The Big Picture
Understand the importance of Primary Treatment in the wider context of Wastewater Treatment, its importance in preparing the influent for further treatment and its’ role in maximizing waste-to-energy opportunities and reducing carbon taxes.
Course Delivery and Context
This course has been designed for live on-line e-classroom delivery via Zoom, for interactive learning, in order to increase the learner’s awareness in specialist subject matter areas. It is part of the wider training Programme for Water Professionals facilitated by Isle.
Overview
Primary treatment is the beginning of the treatment process for wastewater. The course outlines the gravity-based, and generally chemical free settling methods utilized to separate solids and removal of remaining FOGs (Fats, Oils and Greases) for further treatment.
The delegates will be able to explore various tank design, scrapers and pumps related to primary treatment and the common operational issues and how to resolve these in a timely manner.
Measuring sludge levels and sludge blanket levels and visually ascertaining rising sludge is also explored with virtual site-tours. The maintenance of primary treatment tanks along with weirs and channels as well as the energy requirements associated with these and de sludge pumps are looked at in terms of Opex and carbon costs.
The issues faced by the industry in terms of rising energy costs and sludge management and waste-to-energy and the role that the process and us as operators and professionals need to play is also investigated.
Who is this course for?
The course is designed for operators, managers, project managers, designers and optimisers and all those working in the wastewater sector to ensure that they are familiar with both the theoretical aspects as well as operational aspects. The course includes aspects of troubleshooting and hazardous conditions that may be prominent on site.
This course requires delegates to have a basic understanding of wastewater treatment processes.
Course Outcomes
The following outcomes will be conveyed through interactivities, case studies, discussions and teaching.
