Floran Technologies / Blue Earth Labs

Floran Technologies, now Blue Earth Labs, is based in Oklahoma, USA and has developed a range of organic chemicals for cleaning solutions. The technology, called Floran, can be used to clean tanks, pipes and – more notably – filter media.

Floran is designed remove biological and inorganic fouling from the filter media and to break up the Cordylophora colonies which thrive in the under drains nozzles. The procedure allows for media to be treated in situ and requires a filter downtime of two to three days. The Floran treatment has been proven to have a lasting effect and is deemed a valid alternative to the complete refurbishment of sand and anthracite filters.

Floran presented at TAG in late 2006 with a growing US business and no track record in the UK. The water companies showed interest in Floran and TAG subsequently made an introduction to Mouchel’s operational services team. Both have since been working alongside Thames Water to develop Floran for the UK market, ensuring the safe handling of the chemicals and the required product approvals.

Floran has now been applied onto seven Rapid Gravity Filters at Thames Water's Advanced Water Treatment Works at Ashford Common. The outcome was compelling, with Floran delivering results comparable to that of filter refurbishment in just three days per filter. As a result of TAG, Blue Earth Labs, in partnership with Mouchel, now have an efficient, low cost solution for the UK water industry.
